Newspapers Affirm Qatar's Commitment to Protecting Workers' Rights

Doha, May 02 (QNA) - Qatari newspapers highlighted Sunday the world's celebration of the International Workers' Day, which falls on May 1 of each year, stressing that the State of Qatar has consistently participated in this annual celebration in recognition of the workers, the partners of the comprehensive development renaissance by promoting and protecting their rights and providing a safe and healthy work environment.

The newspapers stressed that the State of Qatar has become a leading country in protecting workers' rights as it has taken great steps in implementing labour reforms, adding that the country is constantly updating the laws that ensure more welfare and respect for workers' rights.

For its part, Al-Watan said that in this occasion HE Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs Yousef bin Mohammed Al Othman Fakhroo affirmed the commitment of the State of Qatar to continue its relentless efforts aimed at promoting and protecting workers' and expressed deep gratitude and appreciation to the workers who continue to contribute to the achievement of comprehensive development.

His Excellency affirmed that this day is the culmination of labour legislation and its updating to keep pace with the best international standards for protecting workers 'rights, and that the celebration of International Workers' Day this year coincides with the start of the implementation of the new and pioneering legislation that has strengthened the work environment that attracts workers, especially the legislations that facilitate the movement of workers between different employers and the non-discriminatory minimum wage law for workers and domestic workers, the paper stated.

In conclusion, the Qatari daily stressed that the State of Qatar is working to implement modern legislation in accordance with the highest standards through continuous cooperation and coordination with representatives of employers and workers and various local and international partners to seek the best and most successful ways to care for workers, noting that on this occasion, the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social announced the establishment of the unified platform for complaints and disputes, which will be launched in the coming days that is scheduled to allow employees and workers who are subject to the labor law to submit complaints related to work issues.

In turn, Al-Raya affirmed that the State of Qatar has become a pioneer in protecting workers 'rights, as it has taken great practical steps in the field of implementing labour reforms.

Qatar, the paper said, is constantly updating laws that guarantee greater welfare and respect for workers 'rights in a way that safeguards the human dignity of workers, and is committed to continuing its relentless efforts aimed at promoting and protecting workers' rights and providing a safe and healthy work environment.

The paper hailed HE Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs' affirmation in a speech he delivered on the occasion of the International Workers' Day, which falls on May 1 of each year, that this occasion is a tribute to all workers due to the interest they receive as a partner in the development renaissance in the State of Qatar, expressing deep gratitude and appreciation to the workers who have helped and continue to contribute to the achievement of comprehensive development.

The State of Qatar occupies a prominent position in the world in preserving and safeguarding workers' rights through binding legislation, so that Qatar becomes a model to be emulated for the countries of the region and the world, Al-Raya stressed.

Furthermore, Qatar is working to implement modern legislation according to the highest standards through continuous cooperation and coordination with representatives of employers and workers and various local and international partners to search for the best and most successful ways to care for workers, the paper said.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs announced the establishment of the unified platform for complaints and disputes, which will be launched in the coming days, as the platform is scheduled to allow employees and workers who are subject to the labour law to submit complaints related to work issues, the paper underlined.

Al-Raya indicated that Qatar is making every effort to ensure the health and safety of workers, by strengthening precautionary measures and health requirements at work sites and workers' housing to protect them from infection with the Coronavirus (Covid-19), and has also worked to provide free vaccinations for all categories of workers.

Al-Raya concluded by saying that the Qatari reforms to the labour law have been praised by international organizations, foremost of which is the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), noting that Qatar, with the testimony of all, has made qualitative and advanced leaps at the level of the countries of the region in the field of protecting workers' rights, and it is committed to preserving the human dignity of workers and everyone who resides on its land. 

In its editorial, The Peninsula highlighted the State of Qatar's celebration of the International Labour Day, noting that this year's theme focused on responding to the pandemic crisis, and refection to the International Labour Organization's (ILO) motto "World Day for Safety and Health at Work".

The paper said that on the occasion, HE Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs Yousef bin Mohammed Al Othman Fakhroo, affirmed the commitment of the State of Qatar to continue its relentless efforts aimed at promoting and protecting workers' rights and providing a safe and healthy work environment.

It added that the Ministry has also announced the establishment of the unified platform for complaints and disputes, to allow employees and workers to submit complaints related to work issues.

In conclusion, The Peninsula said that the different governmental and non-governmental institutions have expressed, at different occasions, their appreciation to the valued role of workers and have showed their keenness to apply the best international standards to ensure the security and safety of expatriate workers and provide them with decent living and work conditions.
