Doha, June 15 (QNA) - The Media Team of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding organized a workshop on translation between the Arabic and the Chinese language, as Chinese is the second official language of the Award's seventh session for 2021.
The workshop was presented by the Academic, Writer and Translator Dr. Chang Hung Ye- known as Zahira among Arabs, who is also the Dean of the Arabic Studies at Beijing International Studies University.
The workshop, which was attended by more than 100 students of translation studies in Beijing and the Arab world, addressed the concept of translation, and focused on its being a science that transmits a written or oral text from the source to the target language, and contains ideas and information, as well as a message from the writer of the source text.
Dr. Chang Hung Ye emphasized the younger generation's interest in studying this specialty, adding that literary translation is not only a knowledge, but an art that thrives in creativity, linguistic sense and the ability to bring cultures closer.
She reviewed modern translation theories adopted from foreign languages, and urged the young translators-to-be audience to thoroughly and efficiently translate the text while jeopardizing neither the source nor the target text, even if it they had to add explained details and footnotes in the target text, as long as they render a precise meaning with clear accuracy- in addition to the idea and the sense- to the target audience.
She also gave examples of translations between Arab and Chinese, and addressed the patterns of translating word-for-word and sense-for-sense, and mentioned the pros of each method, emphasizing the importance of the intersection between the two methods as the text requires. (QNA)
