Sheikha Al Mayassa: Choosing Doha as Creative City of Design by UNESCO is Global Accomplishment

Doha, November 14 (QNA) - HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, affirmed that Doha designation as a Creative City of Design by UNESCO is a well-deserved and remarkable achievement at the global level, an achievement that is in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and Qatar Museums vision in playing a major role in building a distinguished, innovative, and advanced nation by promoting creativity, cultural knowledge, and interdependence among the people of society.

In a statement issued by Qatar Museums today, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa said that Doha is a city of innovation and a pioneer in sustainable design, stressing the commitment of Qatar Museums, as a national institution, to promoting the cultural ecosystem in Qatar through initiatives focused on innovation and sustainability.

For her part, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Audrey Azoulay, explained that creative cities around the world are keen to make culture a pillar of their strategies, and not just a secondary component.

Under the auspices of Qatar Museums and in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, the Qatar Business Incubation Center, and other national bodies and institutions, efforts have been combined to support the State of Qatar towards developing a sustainable infrastructure.

Doha is among 49 cities that have newly joined UNESCOs Creative Cities Network (UCCN). The Network recognizes cities for their commitment to placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans locally, while cooperating actively with other cities, internationally.

The Network now numbers 295 cities reaching 90 countries that invest in culture and creativity - crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts, and music - to advance sustainable urban development. (QNA)
