Gulf Times Highlights QatarEnergy Updated Sustainability Strategy

Doha, March 13 (QNA) - The Gulf Times highlighted on Sunday the launch of QatarEnergys Sustainability Strategy, which re-emphasize its commitment, as a major energy producer, to the responsible production of clean and affordable energy to facilitate the energy transition.

The newspaper said that QatarEnergy updated its Sustainability Strategy and set aggressive targets by capturing in excess of 11mn tones of CO2 annually in the country by 2035. It outlined multiple initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including flagship projects such as the further deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. These projects will further reduce the carbon intensity of Qatars LNG facilities by 35% and of its upstream facilities by at least 25% (compared to previous targets of 25% and 15%, respectively), bolstering Qatars commitment to responsibly supply cleaner LNG at scale in support of the energy transition, the newspaper said.

Gulf Times indicated that QatarEnergy has committed to continue pursuing efforts to advance the midterm targets of increasing solar capacity to over 5GW and eliminating routine flaring and limiting fugitive methane emissions along the gas value chain.

The newspaper pointed out that QatarEnergy is exploring a variety of relevant low-carbon energy solutions including hydrogen with its global partners. In line with this, QatarEnergy signed separate agreements with Shell and South Koreas Hydrogen Convergence Alliance (H2Korea) for co-operation in the field of hydrogen energy, both in Qatar and internationally.

These efforts will focus on sectors such as industry and transportation, where hydrogen could offer a credible and material decarbonization route.

The newspaper added that QatarEnergy is placing significant focus on improving its environmental footprint and enhancing the resilience of biodiversity in Qatar through adding nature-based solutions that would eliminate CO2 emissions and enhance local habitats to improve the quality of life.

Gulf Times concluded its editorial by noting that QatarEnergy has clearly reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of the environment, while establishing harmony between economic, social, and environmental objectives in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. (QNA)
