Zurich, April 12 (QNA) - FIFA has welcomed the United Nations General Assembly consensus resolution from the recent 76th session which recognizes the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as the first such event to be held in the Middle East, and encourages the relevant authorities to ensure that it will leave a lasting legacy for peace and development in the region.
The International Football Association (FIFA) said on its official website today that the UN General Assembly resolution affirmed that sport, especially football, has an important role to play in promoting peace, development and respect for human rights thanks to its global popularity.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino affirmed that the fact that the UN General Assembly adopts this consensus resolution is a clear signal of the power of football as a tool for mutual understanding, tolerance, inclusion and peace, and is a further recognition to the new FIFA and its important social role the world over.
The UN General Assembly, in a consensus resolution adopted last Saturday, welcomed Qatar's hosting of the 2022 World Cup.
The decision submitted by the State of Qatar welcomed the unique dimension of the 2022 World Cup, which is organized by the International Football Association in the State of Qatar and for the first time in the Middle East. The General Assembly adopted its resolution under the title "The 2022 World Cup organized by FIFA in Qatar".
The General Assembly adopted this resolution which was submitted by the State of Qatar and sponsored by 106 countries, under the item "Sports for Development and Peace: Building a Peaceful and Better World through Sport and the Olympic Ideal". (QNA)
